Semi Lubisi is a Johannesburg-based self-taught artist from Tembisa, whose work captures the spirit, resilience and everyday stories of township life. Using charcoal, watercolour and acrylic, he creates expressive works that explore both the beauty and challenges of everyday life in his community.
Many of his pieces focus on children, whom he sees as symbols of innocence, hope, freedom, and possibility.
Lubisi’s love for art began in primary school, where he spent his time drawing cartoon characters in his exercise books. Despite the challenges of growing up, his passion for creativity continued to grow and eventually developed into a full-time artistic practice.
Over the years, he has exhibited widely across South Africa and Internationally, including exhibitions in Germany and London. His career highlights include presenting a painting to former President Thabo Mbeki as well as participating in numerous group exhibitions.
