Kuda Gavi
Kudakwashe Gavi is a Zimbabwean-born contemporary artist. Born on 4 November 1981, he studied at the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre in Bulawayo between 2000 and 2001, marking the beginning of his formal artistic training. Early in his career, he participated in exhibitions with the Visual Artist Association of Bulawayo and was later supported by the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, where he worked in residence from 2002 to 2004. Gavi’s practice focuses on animal forms and movement, capturing strength, motion, and energy in nature. His distinctive technique is inspired by printmaking: he works on double-layer paper, drawing and cutting into the surface before applying paint. This process creates a subtle three-dimensional effect and ensures that each piece is completely unique. His approach is expressive rather than realistic. He often uses unexpected colour combinations to reinterpret animals in new ways, adding a contemporary and imaginative layer to his work. Over the years, he has worked independently for nearly 15 years and later exhibited at the Franschhoek Village Market from 2017, where he built strong connections within the South African art community. Today, Gavi continues to create one-of-a-kind works that explore movement, texture, and the energy of wildlife through a highly original mixed media technique.
